Asahi Law Office (the "Firm") has adopted the following policy on the handling of personal information of persons who use its services ("Users"). Through this policy, the Firm maintains a framework for the protection of personal information, ensures that all staff understand its importance, and promotes the protection of personal information.
This English text is provided for convenience. In the event of any discrepancy, the Japanese version prevails.
Article 1 (Personal Information)
"Personal information" means personal information as defined in the Act on the Protection of Personal Information (Act No. 57 of 2003, the "APPI"): information relating to a living individual by which the individual can be identified through a name, date of birth or other description contained in the information, or which contains an individual identification code.
Article 2 (Collection and Use of Personal Information)
The Firm collects and uses Users' personal information to the extent necessary for the following purposes. Where the Firm intends to use personal information beyond these purposes, it will obtain the User's prior consent by appropriate means.
- (1) Provision of legal services
- (2) Notices of lectures and seminars, greetings and other information relating to legal services
- (3) Responding to enquiries from the individual concerned
- (4) Recruitment and, after hiring, personnel management of members and employees
- (5) Other purposes incidental to the above and to the Firm's business
Article 3 (Management and Protection of Personal Information)
The Firm manages personal information strictly and will not disclose or provide it to third parties without the User's consent, except in the following cases. The Firm also takes preventive and corrective measures against the risks of unauthorised access to, and loss, destruction, alteration or leakage of, personal information.
- (1) Where necessary to protect a person's life, body or property and it is difficult to obtain the User's consent
- (2) Where especially necessary to improve public health or promote the sound development of children and it is difficult to obtain the User's consent
- (3) Where necessary to cooperate with a national or local government body, or a person entrusted by it, in performing duties prescribed by law, and obtaining the User's consent would impede those duties
- (4) Where all or part of the handling of personal information is entrusted to a third party to the extent necessary to achieve the purpose of use, in order to carry out business smoothly
- (5) Where personal information is provided in connection with a business succession resulting from a merger or other event
- (6) Where personal information is used jointly with specified parties and the User has been notified in advance, or placed in a position to easily learn, of that fact, the items of personal information used jointly, the scope of the joint users, their purpose of use and the name of the party responsible for managing the information
- (7) Other cases permitted by law
Article 4 (Entrustment of Personal Information)
The Firm may entrust all or part of the handling of personal information to third parties to the extent necessary to achieve the purpose of use. In such cases the Firm carefully assesses the suitability of the contractor, includes confidentiality obligations in the contract, and exercises necessary and appropriate supervision.
Article 5 (Joint Use of Personal Information)
The Firm may use Users' personal information jointly, to the extent necessary to achieve the purpose of use, as follows.

Article 6 (Disclosure of Personal Information)
When a User requests disclosure of their personal information, the Firm will disclose it to the User without delay. The Firm may decline to disclose all or part of the information where disclosure would fall within any of the following, and will notify the User without delay of any decision not to disclose.
- (1) Where disclosure could harm the life, body, property or other rights or interests of the User or a third party
- (2) Where disclosure could seriously impede the proper conduct of the Firm's business
- (3) Where disclosure would otherwise violate the law
Article 7 (Correction and Deletion of Personal Information)
1. Where personal information held by the Firm is inaccurate, the Firm will correct or delete it at the User's request in accordance with the Firm's procedures.
2. Where the Firm determines that a request under the preceding paragraph should be granted, it will correct or delete the personal information without delay and notify the User.
Article 8 (Suspension of Use of Personal Information)
Where a User requests that the use of their personal information be suspended or the information erased ("suspension of use") on the ground that any of the following applies, the Firm will conduct the necessary investigation without delay and, based on the results, suspend the use of the personal information in accordance with the law and notify the User. Where suspension of use would involve substantial cost or would otherwise be difficult, and alternative measures are available to protect the User's rights and interests, the Firm will take those alternative measures.
- (1) The information is being handled beyond the scope of the purpose of use
- (2) The information was obtained by improper means
- (3) The information is being used in a manner that could encourage or induce unlawful or improper conduct
- (4) The Firm no longer needs to use the User's personal information
- (5) A leakage, loss or damage ("leakage etc.") of personal information containing special care-required personal information has occurred or is likely to have occurred
- (6) A leakage etc. of personal information that could cause financial harm through unauthorised use has occurred or is likely to have occurred
- (7) A leakage etc. of personal information that is likely to have been caused with improper intent has occurred or is likely to have occurred
- (8) A leakage etc. affecting more than 1,000 individuals has occurred or is likely to have occurred
- (9) The handling of the personal information could harm the User's rights or legitimate interests
Article 9 (Amendment of this Policy)
The Firm reviews this policy from time to time and strives to improve it. Except as otherwise provided by law or in this policy, the Firm may amend this policy. The amended policy takes effect when the Firm notifies Users by its prescribed means or publishes it on the Firm's website.
Article 10 (Compliance with Laws and Standards)
The Firm complies with Japanese laws and other standards applicable to the personal information it holds.
Article 11 (Use of Analytics Tools and Cookies)
The Firm's website uses Google Analytics (GA4), an analytics service provided by Google LLC, to understand how the site is used and to improve it. Google Analytics uses cookies to collect information about visitors' use of the site. This information is collected anonymously and does not identify individual users. For details of how Google handles this data, please refer to Google's Privacy Policy and the Google Analytics Terms of Service. Users can prevent this data collection by refusing cookies in their browser settings or by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
Article 12 (Complaints and Enquiries)
The Firm accepts complaints and enquiries from Users about the handling of personal information and responds appropriately and promptly. The Firm also responds promptly and appropriately to Users' requests for disclosure, correction, addition, deletion, or refusal of use or provision, of their personal information.
